Prof. MOHAN KAMESWARAN - Managing Director

 
Professor Mohan Kameswaran, Managing Director & Senior Consultant of Madras ENT Research Foundation, is the Visiting Professor of Rajah Muthiah Medical College Hospital, Annamalai University, Chidambaram and at Sri Ramachandra Medical University, Chennai.

He has been a recipient of the ‘PADMA SHRI’ National Award by the Government of India in recognition of his distinguished and exceptional service in the field of Medicine in 2006. He was also awarded the prestigious ‘Indo-Australian Award’ for Meritorious Service by the Indo-Australian Association, and ‘For the sake of Honour Award’ by Rotary club of Madras Esplanade in 2006. He was the recipient of ‘Award for Excellence of Service’ in appreciation of contribution to Pioneering Cochlear Implant Program in Srilanka, by the President of Srilanka, in 2006, ‘Award for Service’ from Vidya Jyothi Sir Arthur C. Clarke, Srilanka in 2006 and Conferred ‘Award for Excellence’ in appreciation of outstanding contribution towards the Cochlear Implant Group of India, by His Excellency, the Governor of Kerala, in 2006. He was awarded the ‘Shri Shyam Lal Saxena Memorial Award 2005-2006’ by the National Academy of Medical Sciences for the best-published work in the field of bio-medical engineering by bio-medical scientists. He is the only Indian to be elected as a Member of the Governing Body-Asia-Pacific Cochlear Implant Board, in 2007. He was conferred the prestigious ‘Tamilnadu Scientist Award-2007’ by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, Government of Tamil Nadu in 2008 and was also conferred ‘Doctor of Science (Honoris–Causa)’ by The Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University in 2008. He is one of the pioneers of Cochlear Implant Surgery in India and was responsible for starting Cochlear Implant surgery in many cities in India, Sri Lanka & Nepal. He is the FIRST Surgeon in South and South East Asia to have performed the AUDITORY BRAIN STEM IMPLANT and the FIRST PAEDIATRIC BRAINSTEM IMPLANT in Asia, January 2009. He is also the FIRST surgeon in Asia Pacific region to have performed the TOTALLY IMPLANTABLE HEARING DEVICE surgery.

He graduated from Madras Medical College. He got his MS from Madras Medical College, Chennai and his Fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He has received several gold medals in his undergraduate and postgraduate days. Along with general ENT Surgical work, he has focused on Cochlear Implants, Laser Surgery, Endoscopic Sinus Surgery and Skull Base Surgery. He is a pioneer in cochlear implant surgery and has the distinction of doing the first Contour Cochlear Implant & Freedom implant in the country. He is the first surgeon in India & South East Asia to have performed the Auditory Brain Stem Implant. He was also the first to introduce the KTP/532 laser in ENT surgery in India, this being the most advanced laser in the world. He has more than 75 publications in major international journals. He is an outstanding teacher and has been duly recognized by the Royal College of Surgeons for which he is an overseas tutor. He has worked as a professor of ENT in King Saud University, Saudi Arabia. He is the first Indian ENT surgeon to have been invited as a Guest Faculty by the prestigious British Academy Conference in 2006. He has also conducted several workshops for the benefit of the Post Graduate students in ENT, including advanced techniques in ENT surgery. He also has to his credit a textbook on ‘Tropical Diseases in ENT’. He is a Doctor with a social consciousness & conducts free ENT camps in several parts of rural India. He has mentored ENT surgeons who hold positions of distinction in various parts of the country.

Prof. Mohan Kameswaran was elected as an Executive Board Member of the International Federation of Otorhinolaryngological Societies (IFOS), in the recently concluded XIX WORLD CONGRESS OF OTO-RHINO-LARYNGOLOGY held from June 1 to 5, 2009 at São Paulo, Brazil.

The first Indian elected to the executive board of the Politzer Society in the recently concluded meet of Politzer Society of London Sept 3 to 5, 2009.

Prof. Dr.S.KAMESWARAN - Patron

Prof.Dr.S.Kameswaran, MS, PhD, DSc, FRCS (Ed & G), FICS, DLO is one of the senior most ENT surgeons in India & the recipient of the prestigious ‘Padmashri’ award of the Government of India in 1991. Most of the present generation ENT surgeons have trained under him. He has completed over 50 years of ENT practice. Having obtained his MS & DLO from Madras Medical College, Chennai, he went to the U.K. to obtain his FRCS from the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Glasgow. As a keen teacher and guide he held many an academic post and has the honour of developing the Institute of Otorhinolaryngology at Madras Medical College where he was the longest serving director. He also has the distinction of being the first Ph.D holder in ENT in India and also received a Doctorate of Science (DSc) Honoris Causa given by the Dr.MGR Medical University in recognition of his long years of research and original contributions. He was awarded the Padmashri by the President of India, and also received the B.C.Roy award for his contribution to his specialty. He was the honorary surgeon to the President of India. He was the past President of the Association of Otolaryngologists of India. Internationally he has been recognized by many scientific bodies. He is a fellow of the Belgian Academy of Sciences and has authored 2 textbooks in ENT and contributed chapters in other international textbooks.

Mrs. INDIRA M KAMESWARAN  - Executive Director

Mrs. Indira M Kameswaran, M.A is the inspiration behind MERF. The entire conception and execution of the institution was her brainchild. As the Executive Director, she is the face MERF presents to the corporate world. She supervises the day-to-day functioning of the hospital and also supports the conduct of various social and academic activities. . She is also the secretary of MERF Charitable Trust, which sponsors free treatment for needy and indigent patients. She heads the finance department of the hospital. She started the first University approved Degree Course in 'Post Graduate Diploma in Auditory Habilitation' in collaboration with leading centers in the United States of America and Australia.She also co-ordinates the Cochlear Implant program at MERF and is the Correspondent of MERF Institute of Speech & Hearing.

 

Dr.R.S.ANAND KUMAR  - Academic Director

Dr.R.S.Anand Kumar, BSc, MS, DLO has over 29 yrs experience in ENT and Head & Neck surgery. He is a Senior ENT consultant and his interests are in the field of Cochlear implantation, Laser surgery, Endoscopic sinus surgery and Skull base surgery. He has conducted several workshops and takes care of all academic activities in the institution. He also directs the postgraduate program and supervises the training of doctors. He has the Distinction of being awarded the MAMS from the National Academy of Medical Sciences .He is Fellow of the International College of Surgeons

 

Dr. MADHAVAN JAGANNATH - Administrative Director

Dr. Madhavan Jagannath, MD, DA has 30 years experience in the field of Anesthesia. His present interest is in the field of anaesthesia for Cochlear Implantation for deaf children.  He has a maximum number of such cases to his credit, the highest in the country.  He is also the first to anaesthetize a patient for “Brain Stem Implant” in Chennai, which was the first of its kind in South East Asia. He heads the Dept. of Anesthesia.
