First
Totally Implantable Hearing Aid in Asia-Pacific
Region carried out in MERF
The first three cases of
Totally Implantable Hearing devices ( Invisible
Hearing Aids) were performed in MERF on
22nd, 23rd and 24th July 2008. These operations
were first-of-its-kind in South, South-East
Asia and Asia-Pacific region. The operations
were performed on 3 patients:
1. A young girl
21 years old
2. A 26 year old software engineer
3. A 35 year old man who is an accountant
All 3 had improved hearing
on the table. The device called Envoy Esteem
2, manufactured by Envoy Company, based
at St.Pauls, Minnesota, USA. The surgery
is delicate and involves attaching piezoelectric
crystals placed over the head of the stapes
bone.
What is remarkable about
the device is not only that the entire device
is concealed under the scalp skin, but the
quality of sound is far superior to any
other device and approximates to natural
hearing.
The device is presently
used for adults over the age of 18 with
moderate to sever hearing loss.
